Just a Coffee
She hopped off the countertop as well, before humming appreciatively. “Still gorgeous.” She ran gentle fingertips over his wings. The kettle began to whistle and she turned away from him. “Don’t knock anything over please.” She said over her shoulder as she pour the water into the cups. “Do you want marshmallows or whipped cream or anything?” She asked, grabbing a peppermint stick and unwrapping it to stick it in her cocoa.
She took a sip and sighed happily at the warmth flooding her body. Raliegh padded over to him and sniffed him before barking, her tail wagging. “She really likes you..”
He realized his jaw had fallen right about the time that the dog barked. That’s it? Don’t knock anything over?! It was the least remarkable reaction he’d ever gotten, and he stood there blinking.
But he now wished he could thank the dog he’d earlier feared would bite his hand off. A glance to the pup and he was sure, somehow it was now laughing at him for the idiot he’d made of himself. “Yeah. Well,” he muttered, shrugging and letting his ‘extras’ fade back into nothingness.
He sat back down on the stool and pulled his hot mug to him, drinking appreciatively. “You really do work for them, don’t you?” he asked quietly after contemplating her quiet calm.
“Them being? The Avengers? SHEILD? The answer is yes to both, by the way.” She took a drink, feet swinging against the counter. She felt her age for the first time in a long time, all the effect of the war and the drugs she’d done as a stupid teenager.
A look at her hand told her she was as ashy as she felt, but she ignored it. “When you’ve served as long as I have, you see weird shit. A while back, I was helping someone one.. and there was this thing I saw one night..” She’s staring into her cocoa, she finds it easier to speak if she doesn’t look at him.
“She looked as if she had bathed in blood, with massive wings decorated in gold chains and tiny rubies. And her eyes.. they were as black as yours. I shot her.. and it did nothing.. But I apparently amused her… and she let me and my charge go free, on one stipulation.”
“That I always believe.”
